23-Dec-2012 -- Gash Point North Summit -- Keeps getting better!

Another fantastic day of skiing in the backcountry of Montana! Mike and I found ourselves at Gash Point, this time visiting the most northern summit. From the base this can be seen to the far right with what seems to be the same elevation. Eye trickery I assure you! The north summit is a mere 300-400ft higher, but makes for a further trek to attain as it sits further in.

I s'pose we should start off with the most exciting portion of the blog post, the video! It's like eating dessert first!

A few hundred feet before we arrived at the tippy top, we dug a pit to test for current avalanche danger..

Alas, we arrived to embrace what view had in store on such a nice day at this altitude!

Thanks again for checking on this update! Should have another update next weekend.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

15-Dec-2012 -- Gash Point -- Best Tree Skiing to Date!

What a wonderful day! After stuffing myself silly with Merete's pizza rolls the night before, I left early for Gash Point. (A pretty interesting story accompany's Gash Point; the Gash 'gang' spent some time up around this mountain after stealing horses and other shenanigans. You can read more about that HERE)

Straight away, here is a quickly edited video of me skiing Gash Point!
(Use full screen 720p for maximum awesomeness!)

Gash Point:
Elevation: 8,886ft
Location: 46.43347°N / 114.31955°W
Directions: Once in Victor coming off hwy 93 take 5th ave. Follow that onto Pleasant View, and from there it turns into Gash Creek. Go as far as the snow allows. :)

Views at the start

After a short skin from where the snow was too deep to drive further, I arrived at the trail-head.
Soon there after, the next couple miles were tedious; too much snow to hike, and not really enough to skin

Graciously the snow got deeper, and skinning became much easier.
To top it off, I found another skin trail and was no longer blazing my own!

I've made a decisive effort to try and end my streak of off-kilter pictures. :)

Finally the summit really came into focus; it looked soo far away in the beginning!

A couple shots of Gash Point from the road on the way home.

Thanks again for taking the time to check out this update! I'll do my best to update once a week. Feel free to follow this blog by email on the upper right of the page!
